Estefania Garces, a senior at Manchester College in North Manchester, received $1,500 for quitting smoking from the Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission at the Indiana State Department of Health.

Kimberly Truesdell, a Fort Wayne resident and assistant features editor at The Journal Gazette, appears in the January issue of Woman’s Day for her weight-loss efforts. She and two other women share their stories.

New preserve opens

ACRES Land Trust has opened its 80th nature preserve – the D&J Eel River Nature Preserve in the southwest area of Huntertown. Judy Schroff donated the 21 acres in memory of her husband, David Schroff. The property is currently closed to the public.

Giving back

•Students at Lakeside Middle School collected 2,314 food items for the Salvation Army food pantry in a food drive held before Christmas.

Walmart awarded $10,000 to Hope Alive Inc. as part of its “12 Days of Giving” initiative. In addition, the Walmart Foundation awarded Community Harvest Food Bank $100,000 for its Geothermal Green Energy Investment Project, in conjunction with Waterfurnace Renewable Energy of Fort Wayne.
