Baseball executives approve sale of Silver Hawks

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The sale of the South Bend Silver Hawks from a group led by former Gov. Joe Kernan to a Chicago-area businessman has been approved.

The Silver Hawks announced Thursday the sale had officially been approved by the Midwest League, Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball. Kernan and other investors announced in November they were selling the team to Berlin Packaging chief executive officer Andrew Berlin.

Kernan and his group owned the team for six years and said it never turned a profit.

Berlin has signed a 20-year lease with the city to keep the Silver Hawks in South Bend.
