Curator Walter Font adds machine oil to a belt-driven grinder at the History Center, Monday. Twice a year, Font checks the machinery at the Ferber blacksmith exhibit, including the drill press at right, to ensure proper working order for visitors. Conrad Ferber opened his shop in 1877; the equipment donated the gear after his son Charles closed the shop in 1962. The History Center is closed through Jan. 15 for cleaning and maintanence.

Shooter's Comments:

The History Center, like most museums, is very dark. Apparently, adequate lighting is harmful to exhibits like anvils and drill presses. So, with little room in the tight Ferber blacksmith exhibit, I wedged myself into a corner and dialed my camera down to 1/15 of a second, held my breath, popped the flash and hoped for the best. I actually got several good images, but I like this one with Walter Fonts' face between the belts coming down from the ceiling and the huge gears on the press at right.
