Somewhere between getting squashed by 36 points at South Dakota State and a 16-point loss at North Dakota State just before the new year, the IPFW men's basketball team has found a defense.
IPFW (9-6, 3-3 Summit League) might have allowed IUPUI's stellar guard Alex Young to score 25 points in the Mastodons' 72-67 win Thursday at Memorial Coliseum, but it was the way Young got there is what made the win so impressive.
Young needed 24 shots to get the 25 points, while the Mastodons clamped down on everyone else in winning their second consecutive game. On Tuesday, IPFW defeated Southern Utah, 79-58.
IPFW won Thursday essentially without its second-leading scorer. Center Trey McCorkle sas fouled and went down with what is believed to be a hip injury with 7:36 remaining in the first half, and missed the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, his replacement, Mario Hines, added 14 points. Frank Gaines scored 22 to lead IPFW, and Justin Jordan scored 12.
