The best one yet

In an early-week visit to IPFW coach Tony Jasick's office, he insisted that his basketball team was getting better. Never mind those blowout losses at North Dakota State and South Dakota State and Purdue. The team is better than that, he said.

Tuesday at Memorial Coliseum, the Mastodons proved their coach's point. IPFW pounded a Southern Utah team that entered on a three-game winning streak, 79-58.

Except for a 42-39 lead five minutes into the second half, IPFW was never in much trouble.

Defense, which was has been something of a concern, was instrumental in boosting IPFW's lead to 63-49 with less than seven minutes to play.

Center Trey McCorkle led IPFW (7-7, 2-3 Summit League) with 18 points, but three others had double figures. Frank Gaines had 12, Mike Kibiloski had 11 and Mario Hines had 10.

IPFW will be home to IUPUI on Thursday at Memorial Coliseum.
