  • Ex-Mastodons guard set to walk on at IU
Jonny Marlin, who left the IPFW men’s basketball team less than two weeks ago, has reportedly chosen to try to make the Indiana University team in Bloomington as a walk-on.
  • Conference moves could affect IPFW
With Charlotte leaving the Atlantic 10 for Conference USA, Butler will fill the opening at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year.
  • Mastodons fall to end season
Hampered by the absence of its leading scorer and first-team all-conference player, the IPFW men’s volleyball team had its season end Friday in a 3-1 loss at Loyola in the first round of the MIVA tournament in Chicago.

IPFW at UT-Martin

When: 2 p.m.

Where: Martin, Tenn.

Records: IPFW 6-3, UT-Martin 3-9

Radio: 1380 AM

IPFW leaders: Frank Gaines (21.3 ppg), Trey McCorkle (7.3 rpg), Jonny Marlin (5.6 apg)

UT-Martin leaders: Mike Liabo (14.0 ppg), Myles Taylor (5.3 rpg), Liabo (5.5 apg)

Key matchup: Both teams have matchup nightmares in their wing players. IPFW has the 6-foot-4 Gaines, a left-hander, and Liabo is a 6-6 swingman who can go inside or out. He’s also leading the team in assists. So far, though, it’s been the 6-10 McCorkle who has been a problem for opponents. In addition to his team-leading 7.3 rebounds, he’s also scoring nearly 15 points per game.

The skinny: IPFW is riding a four-game winning streak. The Skyhawks just ended a four-game losing streak with an 86-83 win over in-state opponent Bethel, an NAIA school. UT-Martin’s toughest opponents have been Louisville (83-48 loss), Mississippi State (76-50 loss) and Ball State (71-48 loss).
