Mastodons win in OT

OMAHA, Neb. – Trey McCorkle scored 25 points, including six in overtime, as IPFW edged Nebraska-Omaha 83-80 Saturday night in extra time.

IPFW (5-3) erased a 15-point second half deficit to force overtime. Once the extra period began, IPFW fell behind by two points on two occasions before initiating a 7-2 run beginning at the 3:44 mark to go up 79-74 with a minute remaining to seal the win.

Nebraska-Omaha (4-7) shot 42 percent from the field to IPFW’s 39 percent, but was undone by a lackluster second half in which its perimeter defense allowed IPFW to connect on 5 for 12 from three-point range. The Mavericks were led in scoring by Alex Welhouse with 24 points.

IPFW won despite a horrendous shooting night by Frank Gaines, whose streak of double-figure scoring ended at 19 games. Gaines was held to seven points on 2 for 12 shooting.
