FORT WAYNE – Sycamore Hills Golf Club is getting a national reputation. And because of it, its getting another United States Golf Association tournament.
When the 2013 U.S. Girls Junior Championship comes to Sycamore Hills on July 22-27, it will be the second USGA event held there in five years. Sycamore played host to the 2009 USGA Womens State Team Championship, which was won by the team from Georgia.
One hundred fifty-six golfers, ages 13-18, will compete in the 2013 tournament.
The 2011 tournament, held in Olympia Fields, Ill. and won by 15-year-old Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand, had a record 1,084 entries. Eighteen-hole sectional qualifying tournaments are played at several sites in mid-June to pare the final field to 156.
The Girls Junior Championship begins with a two-day stroke play. Once the field is cut to 64 players, the tournament is paired into a match-play bracket.
The 2012 tournament will be played at Lake Merced Country Club in Daly City, Calif., near San Francisco. And then it returns to the Midwest in 2013 at Sycamore Hills.
The people who decide where championships go are getting more and more access at looking at Sycamore, said Don Hunter, chairman of the Sycamore Hills championship committee. Weve always had the product, but now people are seeing the product, so we get more opportunities.
Sycamore Hills, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course that opened in 1989, has played host to the 2010 and 2011 Junior PGA Championships, and will play host to it again in 2012.
The USGA is excited to return to Sycamore Hills and Fort Wayne, said Donna Mummert, director of the U.S. Girls Junior, in a USGA media release. The course offers a good variety for setup and will reward the player who is smart with her course management. Players are sure to have a wonderful experience, both on and off the course, during their time in Fort Wayne.
