Kernan group selling Silver Hawks; team to stay in South Bend

SOUTH BEND – Former Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan and about 50 other investors are selling their minor league baseball team to a Chicago businessman who says he plans to keep the Silver Hawks in South Bend.

The South Bend Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/ul0rxx) that Berlin Packaging chief executive officer Andrew Berlin was introduced as the buyer of the Silver Hawks during a news conference Wednesday. The sale price was not disclosed.

The deal is still subject to approval from the Midwest League.

Kernan headed the group that bought the team six years ago. He says the team never turned a profit.

The team's average attendance was about 1,600 a game this past season, fourth from the bottom in the 16-team league.

Kernan says the owners never had enough money to properly market the team.
