Stocking up before heading South for winter

A ruby-throated hummingbird feeds on a zinnia in Fort Wayne. Hummingbirds are bulking up before they begin their long flight south across the Gulf. Hummingbirds are carnivores (nectar is just the fuel to power their fly-catching activity) and depend on insects. They must retreat back “home” to Central America in the winter or risk starvation.
