General Assembly considers iPads for members

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana state lawmakers may trade in the reams of paper they use each session for sleeker iPads.

State Sen. Brandt Hershman told the Times of Northwest Indiana the technological upgrade would improve transparency in government. Hershman is the Republican chairman of a legislative panel that met last week to consider the upgrade.

He said making the switch could improve the speed with which lawmakers make decisions, especially toward the end of legislative sessions.

West Virginia’s legislature has gone completely electronic, and legislatures in Virginia and Vermont are considering similar moves.

The iPads would likely cost upward of $499 for each of the state’s 150 lawmakers. But Hershman said that cost would likely be offset by savings in printing costs and possibly by replacing laptops.
