Rudisill at Old Mill fix slated

Changes are coming around Fort Wayne to improve traffic flow for motorists.

Q. At Rudisill and Old Mill, they eliminated being able to turn left onto Rudisill from the outside lane on Old Mill. Do they plan to install a signal to allow southbound traffic to proceed when the light is green for northbound traffic? – Thom, Fort Wayne

A. Good news, Thom, that exact plan is in the works.

Shan Gunawardena, city traffic engineer, said when Rudisill Boulevard was narrowed, the double left turns for southbound Old Mill traffic were eliminated because there is now only a single lane for drivers to enter onto Rudisill.

The existing traffic signal cycle was left the same in part to reduce the confusion for drivers facing these lane changes. Since those changes have been in effect for nearly six months, drivers are now more familiar with the intersection configuration. Gunawardena said this means the city can change the signal to operate more efficiently.

This means left-turning vehicles will have a left-turn arrow followed by a left-turn yield on green, so northbound and southbound traffic can move at the same time. He said this will improve traffic flow in the area.

The change is to be made after Independence Day, and the city will issue news releases when the change is made.

Q. We need a stop sign at Edgehill where it T’s into Jacob Street. How can this be done? – Gene Donaghy, Fort Wayne

A. You ask, Gene. Gunawardena with the city said early last week that city crews will have the sign installed within a few days. My check on Friday showed the sign is up.

Road update

Drivers should expect a few road changes:

•Amber Road at the railroad crossing between Branning and Redding roads was closed Friday to allow Norfolk Southern to repair the line. The work is to be completed by Wednesday.

•Diebold Road, 600 feet north of Norarrow Drive to Union Chapel Road, will be closed beginning Monday to allow Wayne Asphalt to replace the bridge in the area as part of the Diebold widening project. The closure is expected to last until Sept. 4.

•Ewing Street will be closed at Berry Street beginning Monday as part of its storm sewer project and is expected to last for one week. The intersection with Main Street will remain closed for this period with the westbound detour moving to Washington Boulevard. The closures allow the contractor to complete work in time for the Fort Wayne Newspapers Three Rivers Festival.
