A message for local athletes

– AWP Sports Performance is bringing its leadership message to northeast Indiana boys and girls basketball players.

In conjunction with the 2011 Nancy Rehm Border Wars Classic, AWP is providing players the experience of listening to life coach LaMorris Crawford’s “Character and Leadership in Athletics.”

Crawford will be speaking to the 44 boys and girls from Indiana and Ohio who are playing in the Classic, as well as other players and coaches from basketball programs around northeast Indiana.

The event is being held at 2 p.m. April 30, the day of the 19th annual all-star basketball games.

“Not only can you be a great athlete, but you can also be a great person,” AWP Director of Sales and Marketing Scott Zeigler said at a news conference Monday at Saint Francis. “We instill core values into our kids every day.

“It’s something that has been big on us, and it’s something we want to carry on with these senior boys and girls athletes our for this Nancy Rehm event.”

Zeigler also pointed out a unique aspect of AWP is the Purpose Call on Sundays, which student-athletes can dial in and get a 15- to 20-minute inspiration message from Morris and professional athletes.

“We would lose connection with our athletes when they would go (to college),” Zeigler said.

“So this gives us an opportunity for them to call every Sunday night, and put it on speakerphone, and they are able to do homework or watch football and still get a great message.”

Also as part of AWP’s sponsorship of the games, Indiana players will be invited to preview the AWP facility, (located in the ASH Centre at 1701 Freeman St. in Fort Wayne) following tryouts at 7:30 p.m. April 19 for the boys, and at 6:15 p.m. April 21 for the girls.

Also during the news conference was the naming of the Indiana coaches for the Nancy Rehm Border Wars Classic, which will be Bluffton’s Kevin Leising and Northrop’s Barak Coolman for the boys and Concordia’s Dave Miller and Wabash’s Scott Bumgardner for the girls.
