Purdue to honor pilot hero Sullenberger

WEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue University plans to honor alumnus Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger, the pilot who safely landed a US Airways jetliner in the Hudson River in January 2009.

Sullenberger earned his master’s degree from Purdue in 1973. The university says it will present him with a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the liberal arts college during a ceremony on Nov. 12.

Sullenberger was the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 as it took off from LaGuardia Airport in New York. The plane carrying 155 people struck a flock of geese. Sullenberger glided the plane into the river, and the passengers and crew members were rescued.
