Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has a pretty tall order for his players today – He wants them to be perfect.
Kelly said Wednesday's practice was about paying attention to detail and knowing how to react in any given situation.
Kelly plans to turn up the intensity at practice today.
"It's going to be fast," Kelly said. "We are going to be in helmets and shoulder pads. As I told our guys, (Wednesday) is a work day, (today) is we got to be perfect. On Friday, it is focus on the game, and Saturday, I can't make the plays for them."
Kelly got the sense that his players were getting anxious for the first game of the season Wednesday.
And he said he had to help them focus throughout practice.
"Our guys are obviously at that point where they want to play on Saturday. We are just not going to let them play yet," Kelly said. "They are going to have to do things and pay attention to detail and do all those things. We are obviously excited about the opportunity, but we still have some work to do.
"I really believe that you create an atmosphere where practice is actually more difficult than the games are," Kelly said. "That requires a lot of hands on, you got to be involved. You may have saw some of the pressure that we placed on the guys today, some of those things that they got to fight through mentally. Clearly in a practice structure, I want to make sure our players are getting pressured to make good decisions."
