WHAT: As Americans celebrate the Labor Day weekend and bring summer to a close, law enforcement from throughout the Midwest will be keeping the roads safe by continuing their crackdown on impaired drivers from now through September 6th. Over 10,000 law enforcement agencies are participating in the nationwide crackdown with nearly 2,400 involved from the Midwest. Law enforcement will be especially vigilant during high-risk nighttime hours.
Drunk driving is still one of America’s deadliest crimes. . From 2007 to 2008 the country witnessed a decline in the number of impaired-driving fatalities. However, the numbers are still too high. That’s why law enforcement agencies throughout the country will support an intensive crackdown on impaired driving through September 6, known by its tagline, Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.
According to the latest data, 32 percent of fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes involved a motorist with a BAC of .08 or above — an average of one fatality every 45 minutes. In 2008 alone, nearly 12,000 people died in crashes in which a driver or motorcycle rider was at or above the legal limit. The age group with the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired drivers in fatal crashes is young people age 21-24.
