Indiana State Police say a trooper stopping a Chicago car that was following another vehicle too closely found a little bit of pot and a whole lot of heroin.

The trooper stopped the 2000 Nissan Maxima on Interstate 65 in Tippecanoe County on Thursday afternoon.

The car, with a man, woman, and 3-year-old girl, had a small amount of marijuana, according to a written statement from state police. Continuing the search, the trooper found two hidden compartments that were controlled electronically.

State police said each compartment contained about 1 kilogram of heroin.

Israel A. Pedroza, 27, and Jessica S. Hill, 24, both of Chicago, were charged with possession of heroin with intent to deliver and dealing heroin. Hill faces an additional felony charge of possession of marijuana with a previous conviction and a misdemeanor charge of having a minor in a place where controlled substances were unlawfully present.

Pedroza also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana.

They were released from the Tippecanoe County Jail on $50,000 bond each.

Hill’s daughter was placed into the custody of Tippecanoe Child Protective Services.

According to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, the heroin has a street value of about $500,000.
