Notre Dame freshman Tommy Rees may be listed as the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Dayne Crist, but coach Brian Kelly warned not to assume that means Rees will be used over junior Nate Montana.

Montana, the son of former Irish and NFL great Joe Montana, entered fall camp the No. 2 quarterback, but Rees was listed in that spot behind Crist when the game-week depth chart was released Monday.

"Tommy Rees is the No. 2 quarterback because there are only two slots to fill out. I didn't have 2A and 2B," said Kelly, whose team opens the season Saturday at home against Purdue. "Really, that position is still one that will be evaluated all week, quite honestly all year."

Kelly said Rees and Montana will continue to share reps with the second team this week and throughout the season.

"There is no No. 2 and No. 3," Kelly said. "I don't think it is accurate to say he has nailed that position down."
