TinCaps undone by 5-run inning

The Bowling Green Hot Rods blew open a tie game with a five-run fifth inning to defeat the visiting TinCaps 7-5 Sunday.

With the game tied at 1, Fort Wayne starting pitcher Michael Watt was rolling along until three of four batters – Kyle Spraker, Ty Morrison and Brett Nommensen – doubled to force Watt out of the game.

Watt gave up five hits and six runs (five earned) while striking out five and walking two as Bowling Green (25-37 second half, 56-75 overall) went into the sixth inning with a 6-1 advantage.

The TinCaps (38-24, 74-58) got two runs apiece in the sixth and ninth innings, from two-run homers from Edinson Rincon and Griffin Benedict.

Rincon was the only Fort Wayne batter with multiple hits; he was 2 for 4.

Fort Wayne’s three relief pitchers – Allen Marona, Matthew Jackson and Jackson Quezada – combined to give up one earned run and four hits, while striking out five, in 3 2/3 innings.
