The contest is being conducted as a fundraiser for Newspaper in Education, known as NIE. Money raised will allow NIE to deliver The Journal Gazette and The News-Sentinel to local schools throughout northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.

The winner of the 2010 NIE Pet Star Contest will receive a prize package worth more than $5,500, including $1000 cash, cover model of the January 2011 issue of Fort Wayne Monthly magazine and the 2011 Pet Star calendar, among other prizes.

The second-place finisher will receive a prize package worth more than $1,000, including a $500 gift card to Meijer and third place receives prize package worth over $700, including a personal Ambit Vision Pet Tribute Video and a $100 Target gift card.

All top 12 pets at the end of the contest will be featured in the 2011 Pet Star calendar.
