TinCaps return to Midwest postseason

The TinCaps capped its playoff-clinching day with a 3-2 road win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Saturday.

Fort Wayne had already clinched a spot in the Midwest League playoffs when Lansing lost 7-6 to Dayton earlier in the day.

The TinCaps (38-23, 74-57 overall) are second in the East behind leader Great Lakes. Fort Wayne will begin its quest for a second straight Midwest League championship at 7:05 p.m. Sept. 8 at Parkview Field.

The win began a four-game series at Bowling Green.

The TinCaps scored twice in the first inning and added a single run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead before Great Lakes (24-37, 55-75) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Three players – Jedd Gyorko, Daniel Meeley and Nate Freiman – knocked in a run for the TinCaps.

Seven different players accounted for the seven TinCaps hits, with Freiman and Danny Payne hitting doubles.

Also three different players scored runs, Payne, Jeudy Valdez and Jason Hagerty.

The TinCaps were 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position, while the Hot Rods were 1 for 7.

Starter Matt Lollis (5-1) went five scoreless innings, striking out three and walking two to lower his ERA to 1.62.

Kyle Lobstein (8-8) took the loss for the Hot Rods after giving up five hits and three earned runs in five innings.
