  • IHSAA, coaches share goal, different method

Bellmont runs down big comeback victory

Forrest Fullenkamp’s 1-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds remaining lifted Bellmont to a 28-21 road victory over South Adams on Friday.

The Starfires led 21-7 midway through the third quarter before the Braves reeled off three consecutive touchdown drives.

Fullenkamp had a 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to cut the deficit. Ryley Hankenson ripped off a 95-yard run in the fourth that Landon Baker’s extra point tied the game at 21 with 9:58 left.

South Adams couldn’t convert on a fourth-and-1 play later in the quarter, giving Bellmont the ball on its 35 with 5:40 to play.

The Braves marched 12 plays, all rushes, and chewed up nearly five minutes. Daniel Meyer had 43 of his team-high 171 yards rushing on the drive, and Fullenkamp had 20 of his 100 yards, including the 1-yard plunge up the middle to take the lead.

South Adams got the ball back on its 26 with 32 seconds remaining. But it managed only 6 yards on four plays before turning the ball over on downs.

South Adams quarterback Dustin Wanner completed 13 of 18 passes for 169 yards and a TD.

NEW HAVEN 20, WOOLAN 13: Lucas Salerno threw two touchdown passes, and TeVaugh Hurse rushed for 173 yards and a score as the Bulldogs won at home.

Salerno completed 13 of 25 passes and connected with Brandon Pease on both TDs. Pease caught six passes for 110 yards.

BISHOP LUERS 41, NORTHROP 0: The Class 2A top-ranked Knights racked up 478 yards of offense in a road victory.

James Knapke completed 9 of 11 passes for 183 yards and threw four touchdown passes. Ken Mullen rushed for 116 yards on nine carries and threw a touchdown pass.

CARROLL 43, MARION 14: Corey Nelson rushed for 171 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries to spark the Chargers at home.

ANGOLA 35, DEKALB 7: Alexx Bauer completed 18 of 31 passes for 286 yards and four touchdowns as the Hornets cruised at home.

BISHOP DWENGER 59, CONCORDIA 7: The Saints scored 35 first-quarter points and cruised past the host Cadets.

Jalen West scored 16 seconds into the game with a 62-yard run. His only other run of the game – also in the first quarter – was a 37-yard TD. Remound Wright rushed for a TD and caught a TD pass in the quarter.

Wright finished with 57 yards rushing on six carries and caught two passes for 51 yards. He had two rushing and two receiving touchdowns.

SNIDER 28, SOUTH SIDE 14: John Nelson rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers won on the road.

Snider’s defense had four sacks, recovered two fumbles and had an interception.

HOMESTEAD 52, WARSAW 3: Cody Appenzeller and Zach Terrell had two touchdown runs apiece as the Spartans won a rout on the road.

NORWELL 35, HERITAGE 0: The Knights had two defensive touchdowns – an interception return and a fumble recovery in the end zone – to spark their home victory.

Norwell limited the Patriots to 132 total yards and forced three turnovers.

Jordan Miller returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, and Nathan Rodenbeck’s touchdown came in the third on the fumble recovery.

Justin Shaffer rushed for two touchdowns in the second half and had 70 yards on 12 carries in the game.

CHURUBUSCO 44, CENTRAL NOBLE 7: Kyle Mathewson had four total touchdowns, two receptions and two rushing, to spark the Class A No. 7 Eagles to a road victory.

Mathewson rushed for 139 yards on seven carries and had TD runs of 61 and 46 yards. He also caught two passes, both for scores, for 34 yards.

LAKELAND 34, FREMONT 0: The Eagles managed only 63 total yards and had four turnovers at home.
