KOKOMO – A judge has decided against prison time for a longtime football coach at a northern Indiana high school who admitted having a sexual relationship with a female student.
Former Twin Lakes High School teacher Mark Hay asked for forgiveness during Thursday’s court hearing in Kokomo and said he made a serious mistake with the relationship that started when the girl was 16 years old.
Hay pleaded guilty in June to child seduction charges.
The girl’s mother asked the judge to send Hay to prison to demonstrate the seriousness of his crime.
But special Judge Lynn Murray sentenced him to three years of house arrest and probation and barred him from contact with anyone younger than 16.
The 59-year-old Hay was football coach at the Monticello school for 22 years.
