Oh, captain, my captain

Notre Dame will have rotating captains this season.

Coach Brian Kelly said the coaching staff will select the captains two days before each game, and a player will be named a captain by how he performs during the week according to the team's message that week.

"Let's say it's toughness, mental toughness," Kelly said of a possible message of the week. "And it's an upperclassman who maybe is nicked up a little bit, but he is playing hard during the week of practice. He's got a chance to be a game-day captain.

"It's really fluid. It changes from week to week. A lot of it has to do with where we our in the season and what we are going through. It is really our identity week to week. When he goes out there he is representing things we are talking about as a team on a day to day basis."

Kelly said there is no limit on how many times a player can be a captain, and he generally names two or three captains each week.
