DePuy recalls hip-replacement systems

DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. of Warsaw said today it's recalling two of its hip replacement products.

The company said a new study shows higher-than-expected rates of patients needing a second hip replacement procedure. That’s called revision surgery, and is needed when an artificial joint doesn’t fit perfectly, causing pain and trouble walking.

The recalled systems are the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System. Acetabular refers to the bowl-shaped socket part of the hip.

In a statement announcing the recall, DePuy said it intends to cover reasonable and customary costs of monitoring and treatment for services, including revision surgeries, associated with the recall of ASR. It said is providing hospitals, surgeons and patients with information about the recall to help them determine their next steps.

Patients and health care professionals with questions about the recall are asked to visit depuy.com.

Beginning Friday, the company said, patients in the U.S. and Canada can contact DePuy from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern time at 888-627-2677. Patients in other countries can place a collect call to the U.S. at +1 813-287-1651 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
