Shooter's Comments: Terry Bartholomew, co-owner of Fabrics Works and Drek's Home Furnishings, is moving the shop over to Covington Plaza and we needed some art of him.
I really wanted to incorporate the front display window facing the street and really have some fun with this. I had Terry pose on one of his sofas while I shot him from the outside through the window.
I set up my main light on camera right using a 60" umbrella and a SB900 speedlight to the left of the camera for a kicker. Both lights were slightly behind Terry. The giant window in front of him allowed a lot of great light to come in.
The trick here was to have enough strobe light to get the interior exposure brighter than the outside afternoon's ambient light coming through the window.
To get rid of the glare and reflections on the window I pressed my 24mm lens right up to the glass. Being right up to the glass wasn't wide enough to include Terry's legs and enough background for my taste, so I switched over to the 14mm lens. I kept Terry as close to the center of the photo as possible to limit distortion.

Editor's Note: Swikar juggled shooting through window glass, balancing three sources of light and the potential pitfalls of a super-wide-angle lens to get this relaxed portrait of Bartholomew. The wide angle let him see the parts of the subject he wanted, but also gave the photo a lot more depth of field than he would have had with a 24 mm. This allows the background to be in focus and give the audience even more information about the subject.
