SOUTH BEND – A former northern Indiana teacher has been ordered released from prison after serving 14 months of a 20-year sentence for dealing methamphetamine.
St. Joseph County Judge Jerome Frese had told Maria Stancati last year that he would reconsider her sentence if she turned her life around.
Her attorney said during a court hearing Monday that Stancati, 37, had positive conduct reports and had completed therapy programs.
The judge ruled that Stancati could serve her sentence in community corrections and on probation.
Prosecutor Michael Dvorak said he was reviewing whether he could appeal the judge’s decision.
Stancati and her twin sister were both teachers in Elkhart schools when they were arrested in 2008 after a meth lab in their South Bend home caught fire. Michelle Stancati remains in prison.
