Down the stretch?

Now that we are into the second half of August, we might be nearing a long-awaited cooldown. Of course, that would require things to be “normal,” and this summer has been anything but.

Based on historical averages, we are just more than a week from afternoon highs moving back into the 70s. But looking ahead this year, if temperatures change much beyond this week it looks as if they will actually rise again. It would be a fitting end to August, and to this summer.

Weather wise: I grew up in Memphis, Tenn., which is like growing up in a sauna. In summer, I use that fact to make myself feel better about our heat. Since June 8, Memphis has had one day that didn’t reach 90 degrees – it was 89.
