IPFW tennis, golf earn high marks

Members of IPFW’s men’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s tennis teams were recently honored for their academic achievements.

In addition to his third-place finish in the recent Men’s City Golf Tournament, senior Ryan Olbin added another honor when he and his teammates were named among the nation’s top academic golf teams by the Golf Coaches’ Association of America. The team combined for a 3.43 grade-point average.

For owning GPAs of 3.6 or better, Olbin, Bruno Carvalho, Curtis Coverstone, John McMillen and Tomaz Pinheiro earlier were named distinguished scholars by the Summit League, the highest academic award presented by the conference.

For the seventh time in the past eight years, the IPFW women’s tennis team won ITA All-Academic honors for having a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Individuals with GPAs of 3.50 or higher who were named ITA Scholar Athletes are Ingrid Ballus, Alex Forsyth, Rafaela Hadba and Yuka Kobayashi of the women’s team, and Luis Maselli, Luis Sanado, Junya Saruta and Eduardo Sztrajtman of the men’s team.

IPFW will begin is fall golf season Sept. 11 at the Purdue Midwest Shootout in West Lafayette. The men’s tennis team will play in the Michigan State Invitational on Sept. 10, and the women open their schedule Sept. 18 at the Bowling Green Invitational.
