SKOPJE, Macedonia — A village in Macedonia has set a new record for the biggest amount of beans boiled in a pot, beating the previous total set by a group of students in South Dakota.

A spokeswoman for Guinness World Records told Macedonian television that the record of 3.15 tons was set Sunday in the eastern village of Sarchievo. The previous record was 1.35 tons.

The record was set at the Saint Friday festival, named for a local monastery, where participants traditionally boil beans. The pot used to boil the beans was 5-feet (1.5-meters) tall.
