Kelly pleased, quiet

Notre Dame will hold its second practice of the season today.

After Saturday’s first practice, coach Brian Kelly pointed out some of the things he liked, especially the freshmen receivers.

“I like some of our freshmen,” Kelly said. “(Receiver) Daniel Smith, a South Bend local kid, looked really good today. He’s a lot more fluid than I thought he would be. We were worried that he might go into a defensive end, but he looked a lot more comfortable. (Receiver) Austin Collinsworth looked good. … We need them all, those receivers, they run a lot.”

Kelly also liked what he saw from the new quarterbacks.

“Tommy Rees is a lot stronger. It looked like he would get blown over by a big wind in April. He’s a lot stronger, throwing the ball better,” Kelly said. “And the two freshmen quarterbacks, (Luke) Massa and (Andrew) Hendrix, have got a huge upside.”

While Kelly was generous with his praise of some of the freshmen, he wasn’t as generous with clues of any potential position changes for players.

He hinted that the Irish could look to move a receiver or two to the defensive backfield after the depth took a hit with Spencer Boyd transferring and Chris Badger deciding to temporarily leave the university to complete his Mormon mission.

“We are still kind of making sure they got the basics down, how to practice and all of that. That will probably be two or three days down the road before we get to moving anybody around,” Kelly said.

“I’ve got a lot kinds in mind, just haven’t made that decision yet. We’ve got a list of guys that if we get to that point we may have to look at them. But we haven’t pulled the trigger on anybody yet.”
