Notre Dame released its two-deep depth chart Friday.
There were few surprises.
The biggest one to jump out was Bobby Burger listed as tight end Kyle Rudolph's backup. Burger, who coach Brian Kelly referred to as a role player, jumped Mike Ragone who was the backup last year.
Burger is also in front of former Bishop Dwenger standout Tyler Eifert, who is returning from a back injury that cut his freshman year short last season, and Jake Golic.
Another interesting listing was Dan Wenger getting the nod as the starting center over Braxston Cave, who took the majority of snaps with the first team during spring drills.
"I think (center) is a position of great competition with Wenger and Braxston," offensive coordinator Charley Molnar said. "Wegner at the end of spring ball was slightly ahead, but talk to me on Wednesday, and it could be Braxston slightly ahead. That's what we really want at every position. Two guys competing day-in and day-out, hard, because they really want the job."
Just like the center position can change day-to-day, Kelly said the depth chart is just a starting point and he expects it to change leading up to the season opener at home against Purdue on Sept. 4.
