This week, I talk about charity knitting in general and one project in particular.
I first heard about the Red Scarf Project when I was at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival.
So, my conspirator, Joyce, and I have both worked up patterns for the Red Scarf Project. She is offering out a crochet pattern and I've written up a knit pattern. Those are both linked to from this page.
This year, they are accepting scarves from September 1 to December 15.
The math for this project is very simple. Basically, I guessed how many stitches I would need based on a general gauge idea and the width I wanted. About 4.5 stitches to the inch times 6 inches gave me 27 stitches. The pattern needed 8 stitches in a repeat, so I rounded up to 32 stitches. My gauge ended up being much, much smaller than 4.5 stitches to the inch, and it was clear after working the repeat a few times that it was far too narrow. So, 8 more stitches brought the count up to 40. Hooray for gauge swatches that can turn into a scarf.
