A Fort Wayne man who was kept alive Sunday in part due to the efforts of an Indiana State Police trooper has died.
Henry Hank Yahn died Tuesday while still hospitalized.
The 87-year-old man collapsed Sunday in the parking lot outside Scotts Food and Pharmacy on Dupont Road. Off-duty trooper James Bailey and his wife, Amy, a registered nurse, were driving away from the lot after visiting a restaurant when a man flagged down Baileys marked police cruiser.
Baileys wife headed over to help the man – later identified as Yahn – while Bailey radioed for help.
Bailey then went to the mans side, and the trooper found no pulse or breathing. Bailey and his wife began CPR and continued until Fort Wayne Fire Department crews and Three Rivers Ambulance Authority paramedics arrived.
Emergency crews were able to restore Yahns pulse before they left the parking lot.
Yahn was taken to a hospital where he remained until his death.
Yahn was a retired U.S. postal inspector who moved to Fort Wayne in 1989.
He and his wife, Frances, helped found Community Christian Reformed Church.
Yahn was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
He is survived by six children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife.
A memorial service for Yahn will be at 3 p.m. Friday at D.O. McComb and Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 E. Dupont Road.
Visitation will be one hour prior. A reception will follow the service.
