The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says several local stadium light poles must be inspected and repaired after poles elsewhere cracked and fell over.
More than 2,500 Whitco Co. LP poles 70 feet tall or higher have been recalled, and the list of locations with the poles includes:
- Georgetown Little League, 3732 Maplecrest Road.
- IPFW soccer field, 2101 Coliseum Blvd. E.
- Carroll Middle School, 4027 Hathaway Road.
- New Haven High School, 1240 Indiana 930 E., New Haven.
- Steel Dynamics, 2601 S. 700 E., Columbia City.
Whitco -- a Fort Worth, Texas, company that is now out of business -- produced the poles, according to a written statement from the commission.
It said the poles, weighing 1 to 4 tons, can fracture or crack and fall over, posing a risk of serious injury or death.
The commission said as of June, there have been 11 confirmed times in which Whitco Co. LP poles fell. No injuries have been reported.
The poles should be inspected by an engineer or a Level II non-destructive testing technician immediately to identify cracking at or near the weld connecting the pole to the base plate flange, the commission said. It added that a "visual examination with the naked eye or with a magnifier will not determine the extent of any cracking."
The recall does not affect Whitco Pole products.
