Cougar nets 4th in NAIA discus

Saint Francis senior Matt Truttling earned NAIA outdoor track and field All-American status Friday at the NAIA outdoor championships at Indiana Wesleyan in Marion.

Truttling, who was eighth in the preliminaries, finished fourth in the discus with a personal-best 164 feet, 2 inches.

Also for Saint Francis, Nick Adams, who had the No. 2 throw in NAIA this season at 172-3, got only one throw that counted in the prelims at 140-4 and finished 22nd.

This week in practice, he was accidentally struck in the shoulder with a hammer during a practice, and it affected his technique in the hammer and discus.

Indiana Tech’s Aaron Baker was 11th and Chadd Keller was 21st.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Indiana Tech got a pair of top-eight finishes with Chris Brautzsch getting sixth and Russell Dill seventh.

Indiana Tech junior Dina Petridis earned All-American honors by placing fourth in the women’s pole vault, clearing the bar at 12-2 3/4 on Thursday.

Advancing to the next round of competition after the first round are the following athletes:

The women’s 400-relay team of freshmen Adella King, Zalika Dixon, Emaryne Watt and Abigail Torian ran a 46.81, the fifth-fastest time of the day.

Adella King smashed the school record in the 200 meters, winning her heat in 24.03 to advance to today’s semifinals. Abigail Torian ran a lifetime best of 25.22 in the 200.

Takeisha Hunt advances to the semis of the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.87. Preosha Graham-Coates advances in the 800 after placing second in her heat with a time of 2:15.91.

Brandon Reynard ran the second-fastest time of his career in the 400 hurdles (54.84) to advance to the semis; Dill won his heat of the 400 hurdles in 52.55 to advance to the semis.

Sherrill closer

Northrop graduate Faith Sherrill inched closer to the Indiana University record Thursday on her way to qualifying in the shot put in the NCAA quarterfinals in Greensboro, N.C.

Sherrill posted a 56-5 1/4 , which was the second-best throw in the competition.

The toss moved her to within 13 inches of the IU record held by NCAA champion and IU Hall of Famer Katrin Koch.

Also today in the prelims will be former Homestead pole vaulter Hunter Hall, who competes for Virginia Tech.

In the NCAA Division III meet at Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, Ohio, Manchester will send three into today’s round: John Kimmel (Elmhurst), high jump; Kailey Honn, high jump; and Korey Bucher, 400.

In Division II, Grand Valley State sophomore Melanie Huhn, a Bishop Luers graduate, will compete in the discus today.

Twins end careers

IPFW twin sisters Crystal Martinez Reichert and Crystina Martinez Ridenour capped their college running careers in the 10,000-meter event at the NCAA preliminary-round meet Friday at North Carolina A&T University.

Reichert had a 37:16.93 to finish 41st, while her sister was at 38:00.09 for 43rd.

The twins are the school-record holders in nearly every distance event at IPFW, including outdoor records in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs, and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and indoor records in the mile, 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs.
