Police shot fire suspect, but fatal bullet came from own gun, coroner rules

Thompson

Police shot Barton L. Thompson multiple times in a Monday-morning shootout in Huntington County, but Thompson ultimately took his own life.

An autopsy Tuesday morning determined the Warren man died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, delivered by one of his own weapons near his father's home in Warren, Huntington County Coroner Leon Hurlburt said.

Police had been looking for Thompson after a firefighter saw him running from a burning home at 8584 South Huntington County Road 600 West near Warren on Sunday.

Authorities believed Thompson was headed for his father's house nearby and evacuated his father and an aunt and uncle, who also lived on the same road, Hurlburt said.

About 6 a.m., officers heard gunshots coming from a field just north of their location. Fearing for their safety, the troopers and other officers fired their weapons.

Hurlburt declined to say how many times officers' bullets struck Thompson, but confirmed he was struck multiple times.
