Crash with semi on icy Indiana 2 kills mother, baby

LOWELL, Ind. – Police in northwestern Indiana say a woman and her baby were killed after she lost control of her SUV on a slick highway and slid into the path of a semi.

The Lake County coroner’s office said 37-year-old Stacy Walstra of Hebron and 1-month-old Jace Walstra suffered fatal blunt force trauma injuries in Thursday’s crash.

The sheriff’s department said icy road conditions on Indiana 2 near the town of Lowell likely caused Walstra’s SUV to fishtail and cross into oncoming traffic. The semi driver wasn’t hurt.

John Bryant told The Times of Munster (http://bit.ly/1j7mZ4U) he heard the crash near his farm along the highway and saw a deputy pull the baby from the wreckage. Bryant said he wishes highway crews had treated the highway earlier in the day.
